[Newydd ffeindio hyn yn fy "nraffts".]

Newydd ddeall, ar ôl 23 mlynedd, yr odl ym mhennill cyntaf y clasur yma:

Sometimes, I walk sideways
To avoid you
When I’ve annoyed you.

Athrylith.

Dw i wedi bod yn mymblan y llinell yna ers 1984.

Mae rhywun wedi gofyn ar y maes yn diweddar pwy yw’r band mwya dilynwadol yn y Sîn Roc Gymraeg. Mae’n bosibl dadlau taw JAMC yw e. Meddylia amdano: dim Mary Chain, dim See Emily Play (cyn dy amser di); dim Emily, dim Ffa Coffi Pawb; dim Ffa Coffi, dim SFA.

Etc.

Just found this one in my drafts folder. When I wrote it, I’d just watched the Mary Chain video on YouTube, and understood the couplet quoted above for the first time in over 20 years of listening to Psychocandy. Then I go on to argue that JAMC had an incalculable influence on the Welsh language music scene, as Gruff Rhys’ career started in a noisy, jangly indie band called Emily (who once supported my own band - now there’s an MP3 I really should post), and Ffa Coffi Pawb started life as an out and out Mary Chain tribute band. Oh, yes they did. I may have been drunk when I wrote this, I don’t remember.

  1. I didn’t know you were in a band. Or are you talking about when you and Ade used to ‘jam’ at Owen Street? You should most probably post the MP3, though.

  2. No, it was a proper band, gigs and everything. I recently got a CD of a very rough tape we recorded in the caravan, but the lyrics are just a little bit embarrassing. I don’t know, it may happen.

There’s a couple of pictures here.

Spookily, it’s almost 21 years to the day since my last “official” gig. I was sacked from/left the band* after this local do. I did one more gig with them a year or so later, when the singer they replaced me with died in a motorbike accident.

    * Difference of opinion. I remember it as being sacked, but I was very, very drunk (horrible stage fright), so Paul could be right and it might have been my own idea to leave.

  4. Brilliant. You could write a book/make a movie about this stuff. If you don’t want to post the MP3, you could mail it to me. I promise to keep an open mind about the lyrics.

  5. Nick,

Was looking on FriendsRU and came here. I have been thinking about digging out some of our recordings recently. Do you want me to send you one? It wasn’t me who did that recording in the caravan was it. I definitely did at least one there.

  6. Hiya Bryan, long time ;-)

No, the caravan recording was after your time, it was me, Paul, Phil and Anthony. But if you’ve got anyrecordings (that you’re not going to destroy instantly and spare my blushes) I’d definately like a copy.

Let me know what you find - my email nicdafis@gmail.com
