Book offers hope to the “Celtic Six” languages – adolygiad o’r llyfr Rebuilding the Celtic Languages: Reversing Language Shift in the Celtic Countries (sy hefyd ar gael yn syth o’r Lolfa ond dyw e ddim yn bosibl i wneud dolen i’r dudalen berthnasol).

Mae’r llyfr â rhagair gan Joshua Fishman, a sgwennodd y llyfr hanfodol cyntaf yn y maes:

In it [y rhagair], he emphasises the importance of transferring a language from mother to child if an endangered language is to survive and prosper. “I consider intergenerational mother-tongue transmission to be the core and the bedrock of security for threatened languages, while fancy footwork and computerized theatricals to be marginal.”

Hefyd:

He also warns against “becoming miniaturized versions of the majorities.” He says, “Minorities… should also be multilingual and multicultural carriers of a life-style that is distinctively and historically their own.”

Dw i’n siwr bod gweddill y llyfr yn werth ei ddarllen hefyd, ond mae rheiny yn werth ugain punt o arain Bwrdd yr Iaith ;-)

Bryn Terfel yn y Guardian.

It is likely that each singer will have a natural affection for their native language, but, if you’re Welsh rather than Italian, that affection may well confer a responsibility to communicate your culture’s riches to a world that barely knows the principality has a culture very different from that of the overweening bunch on the other side of Offa’s Dyke.

Dim Angen Talu Tocynnau Uniaith

Stori fach o Ganada (er taw dim ond y Qatar Peninsula ffeindiais i hi) am bobl sy wedi gwrthod talu tocynnau gor-yrru gan eu bod nhw ddim yn ddwyieithog. Ond yn lle iddyn nhw cael eu cosbi gan y llys, mae’r barnwr wedi dileu’r dirwyon.

In practical terms, it simply means the city must print a new batch of bilingual tickets. But it has also awakened some strong emotions nearly three decades after similar cases split the local English and French communities.

In 1976, insurance broker George Forest fought a parking ticket all the way to Canada’s Supreme Court on the grounds that the ticket should have been printed in both English and French. Three years later, his victory forced the Manitoba government to recognize francophone language rights that had been guaranteed when the province joined Confederation in 1870, but were ignored since 1890.

The Quebec Thing – cofnod hynod o ddiddorol, a sgwrs yn y sylwadau yr un mor ddiddorol, am hunaniaeth Montrealaidd/Cwebecaidd/Canadiaidd. O safbwynt rhywun a gafodd ei eni ym Montreal, ond mewn teulu Saesneg ei iaith, ac sy’n gefnogol iawn i iaith a diwylliant Cwebec, er ei fod yn teimlo y “bwlch” rhyngddo fe â’r Quebecois de souche.

I can’t follow the hairpin turns of conversational Quebec French well enough to watch a talk show without having to guess and fill in words and meanings. This makes me feel embarassed sometimes, in conversation, like people are “dumbing down” their French for me, if they don’t switch to English.

Wedi bod ’na, wedi neud ‘ny.

The idea that different nationalities or ethnic groups share some sort of hard-coded mental wiring is a pretty cartoonish idea of the universe, straight out of Asterix.

Mae gen i deimlad y bydd rhaid i ni cael y sgwrs ’ma o fewn yr 20/30 mlynedd nesa, os ydyn ni’n llwyddo ac mae Cymru Gymraeg i gael erbyn hynny.

Wedi sylweddoli (o’r diwedd) mod i’n colli mas ar bosibiliadau Technorati gan ddal i feddwl am “categorïau” ar y blog, yn lle am “dagiau”. Prin iawn bod neb ag ots pa gategori dw i’n rhoi fy nghofnodion ynddo, ond mae’n wneud ots i Technorati, sy’n dangos bob un o’m cofnodion. Felly does dim pwynt defnyddio tagiau does neb arall yn mynd eu defnyddio – mae’n llawer gwell defnyddio “bwyd” fel tag na rhywbeth fel “bwyd time” fydd neb arall yn ei ddefnyddio.

A dweud y gwir, y peth mwya call fyddai defnyddio tagiau Saesneg hefyd, fel dw i’n wneud ar Flickr, weithiau, os taw’r bwriad yw i godi ymwybodiaeth o’r iaith Gymraeg. Dw i’n mynd i arbrofi am sbel, gan roi cofnodion newydd am iaith/ieithoedd yn y categori “language” – dylai unrhyw h dw i’n postio yn y categori yna ymddangos ar y dudalen Technorati cyffelyb.

(O’n i wedi meddwl am drïal dechrau’r arfer o ddefnyddio tagiau Esperanto ymysg blogwyr di-Saesneg, yn lle defnyddio’r iaith fain fel hyn, ondanhebyg iawn byddai’r arfer yn lledu.)

espite the general decline in the written press, BERRIA has become consolidated during its second year. The aim was to make the readers drawn by solidarity during the first year see that it is a good product and keep them; the figures show that BERRIA is winning its place on the newsstands. According to the figures for 2005, BERRIA has a readership of 65,000 in the Basque Country and about 20,000 copies are sold every day. 10,700 of these are through subscription.
