Dead or Alive

Dead or Alive: Hanzaisha (Takashi Miike, 1999), Movietrak. Roedd cwpl mwy o ffilmie Takashi Miike yn fy rhestr Movietrack, a dw i wedi symud nhw i lawr y lein tipyn bach. Nid mod i ddim am eu gwylio, ond dw i ddim am eu gweld nhw eto. Ar ôl gweld un o’i ffilmie ti’n teimlo fel dy fod di wedi bod yn chwarae gêm cyfrifiadur ultraviolent am chwech awr, wrth yfed Redbull a fodca a gwrando ar Motorhead, yn fyw, yn dy lolfa, jyst fel yn The Young Ones.

Naw wfft i’r Cwîn!

Mae’r bardd Benjamin Zephaniah wedi gwrthod derbyn OBE.

Me? I thought, OBE me? Up yours, I thought. I get angry when I hear that word “empire”; it reminds me of slavery, it reminds of thousands of years of brutality, it reminds me of how my foremothers were raped and my forefathers brutalised. It is because of this concept of empire that my British education led me to believe that the history of black people started with slavery and that we were born slaves, and should therefore be grateful that we were given freedom by our caring white masters. It is because of this idea of empire that black people like myself don’t even know our true names or our true historical culture. I am not one of those who are obsessed with their roots, and I’m certainly not suffering from a crisis of identity; my obsession is about the future and the political rights of all people. Benjamin Zephaniah OBE – no way Mr Blair, no way Mrs Queen. I am profoundly anti-empire.

Anjela Duval

Barddoniaeth amgylcheddol Anjela Duval. Traethawd sy’n cymharu’r bardd Lydaweg gyda gwaith rhai o’m hoff feirdd Americanaidd, megis Wendell Berry a Robinson Jeffers. Rhag fy nghywilydd, dw i erioed wedi clywed ei henw, heb sôn am ddarllen ei gwaith (cyfieithiadau Saesneg sydd fan’na – mae llawer mwy yma yn Llydaweg, i’r rhai sy’n darllen honna).

[Duval] used her poetic voice, in part, to encourage, or, more often, to admonish others to pay attention to what was going on around them and to engage in more positive interaction with the environment, just as she attempted in many of her poems to rouse Bretons from their political apathy. Indeed, the two themes are almost inextricably intertwined, for she understood the ì dismantling of Brittany î as an ecosystem to be, in large measure, the result of her compatriotsí submissive assimilation to French culture and language.

Ydy gwaith Duval wedi’i gyfieithu i’r Gymraeg, tybed?

Diolch i languagehat

Record gan Adfer, 1975

Lleisiau Dros Adfer a’r Fro Gymraeg – rhyddhawyd yr record yma ym 1975 i gefnogi ymgyrchion Adfer dros ddyfodol y fro Gymraeg. Dyw e ddim ar gael ers tro byd, ond dyma fe i gyd fel MP3 i chi i’w lawrlwytho. Meic Stevens, Hergest, Mynediad am Ddim a lot o bobl dw i heb glywed achos mod i mor ifanc a diniwed.

A full LP’s worth of MP3s, first released in 1975 as part of a campaign to rebuild the Welsh speaking heartlands (Adfer). You’ll be wanting the links (“llwytho”) on the right hand side. The others are lower quality.

Ewrovision Amgen

Adroddiad o Liet y cystadleuaeth caneuon “Eurovision Amgen”.

Few events could match Lietís ability to represent Europe’s linguistic diversity than this festival, and crucially these are all regional, stateless or minority languages being used by young people both in their music and in their everyday life, from Catala to Cornish.

The event has a far-reaching potential, more so than itís more well known but tired rival as it reflects the real, living linguistic diversity in Europe. Many see Eurovision as a parody of itself with identikit groups, pre-packaged music, and the songs being increasingly sung in English only.

Un iaith, un gwlad, un pobl, un gwaed

English is the Language of America – jyst rhag ofn i unrhywun anghofio. Dweud beth y mynnwch am y Republicans, o leia does dim ofn arnyn nhw dangos eu rhagfarnau, ta waeth pa mor dwp/ffasgaidd mae hyn yn swnio.

Yes, it is a gift to be multi-lingual. However, it is a sure path to disintegration for this nation to allow itself to become the victim of dozens of languages that bear no resemblance to what America is all about. Our republic is based on one nation, one language, one currency, one rule-of-law, one government–under God for the benefit of every person who loves and is a legal citizen of this country. The key to our pride, our love of country, our national consciousness is English.

Enw un o’r awduron yw Frosty. Mae siwr o fod mewn tymor mor ddrwg achos bod Dolig ar ei ffordd. Frosty y ffasgwr. Hmm.

Beth yw “hiraeth” ym Mohawk?

Mohawk philosophy lessons – adolygiad o Spoken Here, llyfr am ieithoedd dan bwys, sydd, yn ôl yr adolygydd, yn parhau’r myth bod pobl frodorol yn fwy “real” neu “arbennig” na’r gweddill ohonon ni, gan fod eu hieithoedd yn cynnwys geiriau amlystyredd, neu fod geiriau ’da nhw am ffenomenau lle nad oes un gair syml Saesneg.

The subtext of Abley’s approach here is a school of thought that proposes that indigenous people are “realer” than we are, more in touch with spiritual realities that “civilization” has long wrested us from to our detriment. I understand that a good while ago, this notion was a useful way to counter the myth that indigenous people are “savages.” But I wonder how many people who read a book like Abley’s need to learn that in 2003, and in the meantime the tradition too often smacks of clapping wildly when a child manages not to spill any of her food.

Mae hyn i gyd yn f’atgoffa o’r sentamentalrwydd y Cymry (ac yn enwedig, y Cymry alltud) ynglyn â’r gair hiraeth, gair sydd, yn ôl rhai, yn “amhosibl i’w gyfieithu”. I fenthyg gair o’r iaith fain, un sydd yr un mor amhosib i’w gyfieithu, mae hynny yn bolycs llwyr. Mae’n awgrymu bod y Cymry druan sy’n diodde o’r fath salwch emosiynol yn well, neu yn fwy dwfn, na’r Saeson (pobl frodorol y wlad mae’r Cymry wedi symud iddi er mwyn wneud mwy o arian).

Os alla i wneud awgrymiad:

hiraeth n.m.f. homesickness; nationalism; combination of the two in people who say they love Wales but choose to live elsewhere in order to further their careers

Pennillion Plwmp #1

O’r llyfr cyntaf yn y cyfres Pigion y Talwrn y Beirdd. Y testun oedd “Pennill yn egluro enw lle”.

PLWMP
Ar fore’r Nadolig
Y gwnaed Ceredigion
A chaed Llwyn y Celyn
Ac Aber Aeron.
Mae’r pentre dan sylw
Yn debyg, Plwm Pwdin,
Ond gorffennodd y paent
Ac anghofiwyd yr wdin.
