Ned-speak is a living language, rather like Gaelic, only slightly more comprehensible to the mass of educated society. It flourishes despite the lack of EU funding, adopting words from other nations – “dobber” was imported from Australia (how Neighbours has enriched our culture). Like other minority languages, it has to fight for its survival and native ned-speakers felt insulted when David Blunkett said that English should be spoken in the home. The Home Secretary should rejoice that many ned-speakers are actually bilingual, capable of such eloquent statements as: “I plead not guilty, Your Honour”

Clywais am hyn wrth ddarllen dyddiadur byw Clio:
Read or Die is great. It’s a steampunk apocalyptic anime with super heroes; the main character really, really, really likes books, and ends up being an agent for…the British Library! The opening scene of the first episode (there are only three, though I understand another OAV is to be made for next year) has an Evil Bad Guy blowing up the White House after mistaking it for the Library of Congress. Oops.

There are many possible applications of speech technology. Speech synthesisers may be used by blind computer users, to read out the screen contents. They may also be used by the vocally-impaired: for example, the famous physicist Stephen Hawking uses a synthesiser to `speak’ with. For the able-bodied, speech synthesis can be used for proof-reading computer documents just typed in, and also in telephone interactions with various services. All these products exist for English and other major languages, but speech technology for Welsh is in its infancy. If a minority language such as Welsh is to survive into the twenty-first century, then it is vital to develop the same kinds of language products and services as are available for major languages.

In an essay for a new book called ‘Reclaiming Britishness’, Mr Blunkett sets out the importance of speaking English in order “to participate in wider modern culture”. There is an implicit disappointment in his comment that “In as many as 30% of Asian British households…English is not spoken at home.”
